Zenit Saint Petersburg have established a new club record for the number of penalties awarded in a single Russian Premier League season, reaching 13 spot-kicks during their 29th-round clash against Sochi.
The milestone came early in the match when Zenit were awarded a penalty in the 13th minute. However, Luis Enrique failed to convert, striking the crossbar. According to data from Tsifroskop, this was the 13th penalty the club has earned this campaign.
Out of those 13 attempts, Zenit have successfully converted eight. The previous record, set in the 2015/16 season, stood at 12 penalties, with nine of them scored.
Despite the missed opportunity, Zenit went on to secure a 2-1 victory over Sochi. Luis Enrique redeemed himself by scoring in the 59th minute, assisted by Maksim Glushenkov, while Aleksandr Erokhin added the winner in the 84th minute. Sochi’s goal came from Zakhar Fedorov in the 31st minute.
With one round remaining in the championship, Zenit remain in the title race for the Russian Premier League crown.
