Deandre Ayton has become a central figure in the Los Angeles Lakers’ offseason plans, with the key question being whether he will exercise his $8.1 million player option or opt out to seek a more lucrative contract.
According to Dan Woike and Sam Amick of The Athletic, Ayton “could opt out to try to find a bigger payday with the Lakers or elsewhere,” a decision that could reshape both his market value and the Lakers’ salary cap structure. If Ayton departs, Los Angeles would gain additional flexibility as it builds around Luka Doncic and evaluates which core pieces to retain.
Ayton wrapped up a solid regular season with the Lakers, playing 72 games and averaging 12.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.0 block while shooting 67.1 percent from the field. He also stepped up in the playoffs, particularly against Houston, where his physical presence helped the Lakers advance in six games during the first round.
As The Athletic report highlights, Ayton “certainly played to his $8.1 million contract this season,” making his next move critical. The Lakers would like to keep him if the price stays reasonable, but a strong market for his services could complicate that.
His chemistry with Doncic emerged as one of the season’s bright spots. Ayton provided a reliable interior scoring option and consistent rebounding, with his efficiency stabilizing a frontcourt that underwent several changes throughout the year.
The Lakers’ broader summer remains uncertain, especially with LeBron James potentially leaving. Woike and Amick noted that if James moves on, the Lakers could free up nearly $50 million in cap space by renouncing his Bird rights and those of Rui Hachimura, though that hinges on multiple roster decisions.
Ayton isn’t the only rotation player facing a choice. Marcus Smart also has an opt-out option, while Hachimura is considered a priority due to his shooting and locker-room presence. Still, Ayton’s decision might have the most direct impact on the Lakers’ ability to remain competitive without sacrificing financial flexibility.
The report added that if Ayton leaves, the Lakers could explore other frontcourt options, including re-signing Jaxson Hayes or targeting free-agent centers. This raises the stakes around Ayton’s $8.1 million option, as his choice could determine whether Los Angeles maintains continuity or begins reshaping its roster around Doncic.
