FC Basel’s Swiss Super League clash with FC Thun has been called off after a fire broke out at their St Jakob-Park stadium. The blaze, which erupted on Friday evening, “destroyed” the first-team dressing room, including players’ kits and boots. It also caused “significant damage” to equipment rooms, the coaching and team manager’s office, physio and shower facilities, as well as medical and technical gear.
No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire has “not yet been clarified,” according to a club statement.
Basel, currently fourth in the Swiss Super League standings, were scheduled to travel to league leaders FC Thun on Saturday. “The fire, accompanied by heavy smoke development, caused significant damage and completely destroyed the entire locker room area of the first team,” the club said in a statement. “Due to the damage incurred and no usable game and medical equipment available, the away game against FC Thun is not possible for FCB.”
The postponement has been approved by the league, and a new date for the fixture will be announced later. St Jakob-Park hosted the 2016 Europa League final, where Liverpool faced Sevilla, as well as the 2025 Women’s Euros final between England and Spain.
