Dwyane Wade Believes LeBron James Will Take Time Off Before Deciding His Future

Dwyane Wade, a close friend and former teammate of LeBron James, expects the superstar to take a step back before making any decisions about his playing future. Speaking during a recent broadcast, Wade shared insights into how James typically handles major career crossroads.

Wade, who won two NBA championships alongside James with the Miami Heat, emphasized that James will likely prioritize family and reflection over haste. “That’s the question. I think, if we all know LeBron James, he’s gonna take some time off and go drink some wine. He’ll go out a little bit around the world, but he’s gonna spend some time with his family. He’s gonna sit down and try to make the best decision for the James family at the end of the day,” Wade said during the Game 4 broadcast.

At the time of these comments, the Los Angeles Lakers were on the verge of being eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the playoffs. James, who becomes a free agent after this season, must decide whether to continue his career and, if so, whether to stay with the Lakers or join another team. Wade noted that much of that decision hinges on the team’s competitiveness. “Bron is in Year 24, coming back next year. He wants to play for something. And so, are they in a position that he can play for something and compete for something?” he added.

James’ career has seen remarkable highs and challenging lows. After seven seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, including one NBA Finals appearance in 2007, he joined Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami in 2010. That move triggered eight consecutive NBA Finals trips, resulting in three championships. Since joining the Lakers in 2018, James has made the playoffs six times, winning the 2020 title in the bubble, but also missing the playoffs twice. In 2025, the Lakers acquired Luka Dončić in a blockbuster trade, but Dončić missed the 2026 postseason due to a hamstring injury, leaving the team without a key star.

Wade admitted he has no inside knowledge of James’ eventual decision. “I don’t think no one knows. I think one of the things that him and his entire team have been great at is they hold their cards close to their chest. Decisions are made by LeBron, and they all respect it, and they wait on him to decide what he wants to do. So I don’t think none of us can go there until he makes the decision for sure,” he said.

As the Lakers’ season hangs in the balance, the basketball world waits to see whether James will return for a 25th season or step away. For now, Wade’s words suggest that the answer will not come quickly.
